Choosing the best bridal MUA?

Updated: May 1

One of the exciting things in planning your wedding will be determining the most flattering look for your Hairstyle and the Bridal Makeup. Unlike all your other preparations, this is probably one of the most fun yet, possibly the most daunting!

It goes without saying that you need to find the best person for the job. But, in a world full of social media, blogs and tutorials, it is often overwhelming with the array of choices and inspiration. In consideration of these, with the latest red carpet looks and the thousands of images on Pinterest and before you know it, you are thinking bohemian curls and blue eyeliner!

I have heard of so many bridal horror stories of poor unsuspecting brides that have been cake-faced with makeup and hairstyles that don’t last! Having unprofessional artists who are burnt out, just slap on the makeup and leave, eyelashes that have become unstuck, lips that have worn off by the time the photographer has arrived, and the list goes on!

So here are my tips for finding the Best Bridal Makeup Artist…

  1. Look for someone who has a lot of experience, this means you’ll be working with a makeup artist who has the ability to actually achieve the desired style within an appropriate time frame.

  2. At the trial, look at their kit and the condition of their tools and palettes, are they pristine and well organised, do they consider infection control measures and are they professional to deal with?

  3. Look for a makeup artist who is passionate about their craft. Meet them in person, have a trial and ask a thousand questions! Experienced and confident Hair and Makeup Artists will talk to you about face shape, eye shape, skin tonality and ‘why’ it actually suits you! Most importantly, a good Makeup Artist will listen and then work with you in creating a look that suits your features and personality!

  4. Expect to pay for a trial; if you want an expert, pay for an expert! ‘Free’ or ‘cheap’ isn’t helpful when you have to trial several artists to find the best person for the job!

  5. Know your flaws and don't blame the MUA. While uneven skin and blemishes can be covered, it's a long term goal to get your skin in tip top condition before the big day, consider diet, stress and exercise along with good sleeping habits and skin care to get your skin in flawless condition.

  6. Be realistic about your real look without a filter and what your best features are, stop comparing yourself to a model or celebrity, you are unique, embrace it!

  7. Go by your gut feel! After sending an email or text enquiry, see who responds honestly and professionally. Don’t be nervous to make phone calls and have a conversation rather than texting only.

  8. Finally, clarify all costs upfront and ask for a formal quote/invoice, make sure they are committed to your booking date and and ask about any extras or surcharges. Professionals will be up front about all expenses.
